The pillars of landscape bioengineering
Landscape bioengineering consist of three main elements – plants, methods & knowledge. All elements are important. It is not possible to find an effective solution without knowledge of the specific issue, without plants, that are used as materials & without proper methods, including tools.
Plants are important component of landscape bioengineering. Usage of plants depends of the main goal, limitations & availibility.
Pioneer plants: knapweeds, ericaceous & pollutant accumulation plants, such as
sunflower mustard & others are used for regeneration of degraded & polluted lands.
Plants with a wide root system, adapted to specific growing conditions, such as cattail
, willow & other are used for bank & slope plantings & structures.
A wide range of annual flowers, perennials and woody plants is used for decorative plantations. However, mainly willows are used for living structures.
There are two main methodological principles in landscape bioengineering – different types of plantings & different living structures. One type of plant or different combionations of plants can be used. The proper tools & other materials, as well as effective logistics of plant material, are crucial for successful project implementation.
Some examples: living willow hedges (fedges), live cribwalls, living chlidren’s structures, domes, woven trees, woven trees, decorative structures, phytoremediation projects, etc.
Effective implementation of landscape bioengineering projects requires knowledge of plants & their cultivation, environment and ecology, soil and climate, as well as other specific knowledge in a specific issue.
The first step is understanding that we cannot continue the same way… We should seek for green technologies & solutions, change our economic activity towards sustainibility & even change our ordinary habits to live in harmony with our planet.Actions can be at the global level, like national emission reduction programs or household level – recycling.
